Hey People, Microsoft is Not Trying to Be Apple!

2008 September 12

So the newest of the Microsoft commercials staring Bill Gates and Seinfeld has been released and it’s funny, funnier than the first one. But once again people can only look at it and think WTF? I am glad to see that some people are defending it, but for all of the rest… Microsoft is not trying to be Apple!

These commercials are not to compete head to head with the Mac and PC guy commercials from Apple, these commercials are not even to necessarily sell copies of Vista. These commercials are to get Microsoft into the headlines, onto television sets of Americans, and become more of a household name with the younger generation like Apple has become. And what is the best way to do that? HUMOR! Take a look at most every Super Bowl commercial. They are funny, and half the time you do not even know what they are selling, but people naturally remember something and want to see it again and again when it is funny. That is the point of these commercials, to make you laugh. Seinfeld had, arguably, one of the most popular and most successful television show of our time. He is funny, he is still funny. No he is not? Have you gone to see him perform lately, or are you just judging from some of the more commercial things he has done like that movie about a bee?

Apple fans, congratulations. Apple is a serious threat to Microsoft now. Apple has done revolutionary things with the music, telecommunications, and desktop industries. I have the up most respect for that. But please, please, don’t hate just to hate, and stop comparing everything your enemy does to your side of the border. This is the first step Microsoft has taken in a long time to show that it is human, and the commercials are funny! On top of it, it’s working, Microsoft is getting so much press over these spots and no press is bad press. Lastly, yes OS X is taking more and more strides inwards and grabbing more and more of the market. However, Microsoft still owns most of it. So again, Microsoft is not trying to be Apple.

P.S. Before the emails flood in. I am not an Apple hater. I myself have been toying with the idea of making the switch from time to time. I am very much interested in starting to develop for OS X and the iPhone. So I am not here to get into any arguments with Apple fanboys.

The reason you are seeing for all this “hatred” and happiness with Microsoft’s decline in great part has to do with Microsoft’s behavior and product quality. I can speak personally when I say Microsoft has reduced the quality of life. I am forced to use their software and it breaks, causes lost data, wastes my time, etc…. If you add this up over decades you can come to understand why Microsoft causes co much animosity. It is so satisfying to use OS X, that going back Vista or XP actually makes me quite highly frustrated. We would be collectively better off if Microsoft ceased to exist, their contribution to computer IP is so small and their business practices so bad, and now with VMWare there is no reason to use them as an API to programs any more. So this hatred of Microsoft is rational and correct. Companies that make influential products that are of low quality and cause great unhappiness and frustration should be hated.

I am not sure we would be better of if Microsoft ceased to exist. However. I agree that Microsoft’s quality has gone down. I do not like how they spread themselves so thin. However, it is different. Windows can be installed on almost any computer. Apple still limits itself. I am always said that the second Apple releases OSX for general consumption, not only will I be the first to switch, but game is over. I have too much money invested in my hardware to go out and pay three times as much for equal hardware.
